"Daddy's Song" (Hat in His Hand)
A policeman knocked on the front porch door holding his hat in his hand. My wife said Lord what ya do now honey! Are you in trouble again? I peaked around the corner saw his hat in his hand but I really didn't know what to think. So my wife let him in, we both sat down and he began to speak. He said I found your dad at 8:15 appears he took his life. The note said he was sick as a dog and never would again be right. And way down at the bottom of the note said "I really, really miss my wife". Hat in his hand, cradled in his hand, the way I know the Lord is cradling that ailing man. I called my sis just as fast as I could but she would not even let me speak. She said come quick brother, I can't find daddy and I'm about to freak because the guns are gone and the truck is gone and there's notes everywhere that say exactly who to call and exactly what to tell em when the good lord carries him away. Hat in his hand, cradled in his hand, the way I know the Lord is cradling that ailing man. I said sit down sis please don't say a word this' the hardest thing I'll ever do. But I heard us both crying before I got started, Lord help me get through. I said the guns are gone and the truck is gone cause daddy took his life. The note said he was sicker than a dog and never would again be right. And highlighted down at the bottom of the note said "I really, really miss my wife." Hat in his hand, cradled in his hand, the way I know the Lord is cradling that precious man. Hat in my hand, in my trembling hands, I told her that the lord had reunited mom and dad. © Al Heberer 2011 © |
